Christmas at Grace Lutheran Church

For unto us a Child is born,
unto us a son is given: and the
government shall be upon his
shoulder; and his name shall be
called Wonderful, Counselor, The
mighty God, The everlasting Father,
The Prince of Peace.
Isaiah9:6

It was not until the fourth century A.D., some three hundred
years after Jesus was born, that anyone even considered
celebrating His birthday, Since no one knew the exact day
Jesus was born, Christian churches celebrated the birth of
Jesus at different times during the year. Some celebrated
in springtime around the time of Passover, others preferred
wintertime. A monk by the name of Dionysius Exiquus was
assigned the task of naming an official date for the birth of
Jesus. And so December 25th came to be known as the
'Feast of the Nativity' for Christians in Rome and elsewhere.

Early celebrations were solemn and dull, especially in
comparison to the Roman sun festival which was also
celebrated on the same date. For the sun festival, evergreens
were hung in houses, trees with candles were carried in
parades through the streets, and bonfires burned everywhere.

Gradually the church leaders converted many of these
traditions in the celebration of Christmas.

In current times we prepare our church for the celebration
of the 'Feast of the Nativity'. We will work and sing
together as we learn about the symbols of Christmas.
Each of us will do our part as we prepare our sanctuary for
the most important birthday ever, the coming of Emmanuel.
