The Poinsettia The red poinsettias we place in the sanctuary are a traditional flower of Christmas. The poinsettia is a tropical flower and represents a Mexican influence on our holiday celebrations. According to Mexican legend, when blood fell on the earth from the broken heart of a young girl, a poinsettia grew from each drop. For Christians the red reminds us of the blood Christ shed for us on the cross. The pointed leaves of the poinsettia form the shape of a star and lead us back to Bethlehem.
