Food Insecurity

What is "Food Insecurity"?

Food insecurity is the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food.  In September of 2015, the Economic Research Service at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) released its most recent report on food insecurity, indicating that 42 million people in the United States are living in food insecure households, 13 million of whom are children.  Furthermore, one-third of all chronically ill adults in the United States must choose between buying food or the medication they need, because they cannot afford both.

As people of faith, God calls us to help those whom Jesus called "the least of these."  (Matthew 25:40)

ELCA World Hunger Appeal

Year round, members donate funds for the hungry around the world. During Advent the Adult Forum is discussion this issue, and the offering from Pastor Samantha's installation service was given to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal.

Help with St. Peter's Free Meal

The Social Ministry team is going to start helping with the monthly free meal served at St. Peter's Macungie the first Friday of each month.  Our first outing is April 2017.  If you could help plan, cook or serve on that date, speak to any committee member or call the church office.

Food Pantry Donations

Members are encouraged to bring food donations any time, which are given to the Zionsville Area Food Pantry at Zion's Lutheran in Old Zionsville.  A list of most-needed items includes: canned meat or fish (chicken, tuna, ham, or Spam), canned soup or stew, canned broth or gravy, spaghetti sauce, canned tomatoes, meal helpers, rice, dried pasta, boxed macaroni and cheese, juice, canned fruits, pancake mix, syrup, cereal, powdered milk (individual boxes or pouches).

Daybreak

On the third Thursday of each month, members from Grace travel to downtown Allentown where they prepare and serve a meal for clients of the Daybreak program.

CROP Walk

This yearly walk in October raises funds and awareness of hunger. Monies raised in the Allentown Crop walk are given to Lehigh Valley area food banks.
